New IDC analysis: The value of Fivetran for enterprise

The quantifiable results of automating, replicating and connecting sources, then moving data with speed? $1.5 million in average annual productivity benefit.
October 19, 2023

Businesses need to know that investment in data tools will pay off. IDC conducted a recent study of Fivetran customers and found that the payoff isn’t just quantifiable — it’s substantial.

IDC calculated that study participants achieved benefits worth an average of $3,642,700 per organization over three years through more productive staff performance and business enablement — resulting in a three-year ROI1 of 459 percent. The payback period for Fivetran was only three months2.

Access to real-time data is crucial to staying competitive and innovative, and having the right data movement platform is key to harnessing data to generate insights that drive innovation, increase efficiency and provide better customer experiences. The IDC report clearly demonstrates Fivetran’s ability to help businesses unlock their data for faster time to insight and improved decision-making. IDC spoke to Fivetran customers in software, financial services, nonprofit, retail, manufacturing and healthcare. Their results demonstrate the swift and measurable impact Fivetran has on revenue, efficiency and strategic decision-making.

Making the switch to Fivetran

Engaging Fivetran enabled each of the study participants to overcome significant limitations they faced with other data platforms. The participants chose Fivetran for its superior reliability and scalability, its simplification of data sources and its superior breadth of connector capabilities.

One customer from the healthcare industry told IDC: “My organization was using another solution before, and we found that it wasn’t quite meeting our needs in terms of reliability and scalability. We wanted something that was easier to configure, and would have a more robust path to scale.”

Massive time and cost savings; Increased employee productivity

With Fivetran, departments across organizations increased their productivity. What were the quantifiable results of automating, replicating and connecting sources, then moving data with speed? $1.5 million3 in average annual productivity benefit. That breaks down to $89,5004 per data source.

“The largest benefit is that it takes basically no time to load data from a new tool via Fivetran. You set up the connection and then you have your data within a few hours to a day, depending on the volume. Without Fivetran, we would need to build a connection via an open-source tool, which would take longer. So, this means we do work in the matter of hours rather than days,” says one customer in the software industry.

Each organization echoed this sentiment, with one saying that the ability to set up a connector with a destination “has saved weeks and weeks of time, just from the set-up front.”

Data teams saw the biggest productivity gains, from engineering to analytics to governance. Data engineering teams experienced a 48 percent increase in productivity because using Fivetran “freed up time for engineers to work on projects of greater value to the company,” according to one study participant.

Other teams across organizations also saw a hike in productivity. Finance teams experienced an increase of about 40 percent on average, logistics teams saw a 29 percent boost, and marketing, sales and product management teams all saw double-digit gains as well.

Driving growth: Fivetran’s impact on business enablement

Democratizing access to real-time data with Fivetran gives enterprises a competitive edge across their business functions.

  • Broader access to business data: Improved access to business data facilitates better-informed decision-making across the board.
  • Faster organizational data access: Accelerated data availability enables faster responses to evolving market conditions.
  • Enhanced marketing capabilities: Elevated data analysis and segmentation empower marketers to craft targeted campaigns with extreme precision and drive more sales
  • Faster processes and services: Increased agility and efficiency drive competitive advantage with faster processes and a wide array of new services offered
  • Improved customer service: The ability to make informed decisions and respond to customers in a timely manner elevates the customer experience and promotes loyalty.

“Prior to Fivetran, some of the pipelines that are in use in my organization have been very difficult for users to access data from their business applications – data tended to be very siloed [and it was] very manual [to get access]. Fivetran has enabled broad and easy access to data,” an enterprise in the manufacturing industry told IDC.

Overall, Fivetran customers saw an average of $177,400 in annual operational cost savings.

Companies using the Fivetran platform are able to quickly unlock access to real-time, reliable data to drive faster time to insights, innovate ahead of the competition and discover new opportunities for business growth all while delivering cost savings and productivity benefits. The IDC study showcases the incredible ROI, quick payback period and long-term efficiency gains throughout an organization that Fivetran customers can expect.

1 IDC’s methodology of ROI compares the net present value (i.e., total benefits minus total investment costs over three years, both with a 12% discount rate applied) of using Fivetran over three years compared with the total investment costs over the same three years. The ROI does not scale linearly with the payback period because some of the investment costs are upfront (year 0), but others happen over time as the organization uses and realizes benefits with Fivetran.

2  The payback period is the amount of time required to recoup the cost of the initial investment in Fivetran. This happened around month 3 on average for study participants as benefits realized through the use of Fivetran accrued to become greater than investment costs required up until then.

3 Benefits achieved from deploying Fivetran, on an average annual basis, factoring in deployment time. It is a sum of the benefit categories – data staff, line of business and business enablement benefits.

4 Interviewed organizations had an average of 17 data sources.
